PCOS -- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

What is it?

Put simply PCOS is a condition which sees the ovaries enlarge and become engorged with fluid filled sacs. These sacs block the mechanism of ovulation, thereby compromising fertility.

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms here can be wide ranging, but include irregular and scant menstrual bleeds, fertility problems, excess bodily hair growth, acne, depression, mood swings and weight gain. Often the symptoms are overlooked until fertility investigations commence.

What can be done to help?

Mainstream treatments for PCOS include metformin hydrochloride. This is a biguanide drug which inhibits the production of glucose in the liver, thereby reducing blood sugar levels. PCOS sufferers are often found to be insulin resistant which causes an overproduction of insulin, hence this therapy working for them. The excess of insulin causes the ovaries to produce an excess of testosterone, which inhibits or prevents follicular development.
